I wake up just as the sun starts peaking its head over the horizon and shining light all over this apartment building. So, I wake up Haversman. Poor guy looked scared to death when I woke him up, must of thought I was a zed. We decided it was time to get the hell out of this city. As we started heading down the stairs, we both stop dead in our tracks. We hear a couple of guys downstairs and a guy shouting across the street.
We put our backs up against the wall, pull out our hammers, and we whisper to each other, "Be as quiet as possible." "Maybe they don't know we're here." "Maybe they will just go away." After about five minutes, we realize they aren't going anywhere any time soon. So, Haversman says, "Watch my back." And peaks his head out and shouts downstairs, "Stop where you are, we don't want any trouble!" And we get a response going, "Neither do we! We're gonna get out of here!" We give them about a ten count, and we hear them taking off down the street. We didn't know which direction they went, or if they went out the front or the back. We gave them another ten minutes, then we started to make our way down.
I could see out of the second story window the edge of the city on the other side of a construction site from the back of the building. We decide that we're gonna go that direction, and try our luck. We bust open the back doors and start haulin' butt towards the construction site. We find a hole in the fence down a ways. It was between the construction yard and a large building. When we get up alongside it, I said, "Oh, look! It's the super market! Its probably got plenty of food and water and supplies." And since we hadn't seen people since the two downstairs, we figured it might be worth the risk. Boy, was I wrong.
After we sneak around the side, there was a surprising lack of zombies. I thought there should be some outside, but like I said before, I wasn't gonna complain. As we get inside, we see a chemical light in the center of the store, that had been recently been turned on. I get this gut-wrenching feeling in my stomach as a POP POP POP of an automatic weapon goes off. Haversman gets clipped. We duck behind some shelves. We duck behind some shelves. That's when I hear a ka-blam! A shotgun blast right next to us. I turn around to see Haversman fall to the ground in a big pool of blood, and a guy standing a few feet behind him with a shotgun. I go into this rage and I charge him with a hammer, and I beat his face in. I grap his shotgun, and his backpack. I reach over and grab the backpack from Haversman, which was all ripped up from the shotgun blast, and just took off running.
Out of the store, turned left, went straight into the trees and then headed right. By this time I was ballin' my eyes out. My best friend had just been killed right in front of me. I crossed the main road and headed towards the safe zone that we had been to before. I was able to make it there alright. When I finally arrived, I checked the backpacks to find two boxes of eight rounds for a shotgun, a 9mm magazine, and a few pieces of candy bars. I can't believe how much stuff I left behind.
After wandering the safe zone for a day or two, in my sorrows of a whiskey bottle, the last one I've ever seen, I found this kid. He had just come south from up north somewhere, who knows where. I invited him to watch my back, in exchange I'd give him this large backpack, a reload for his shotgun that he had and a clip for his pistol. He didn't seem to gun savvy, so I knew I'd have to teach. Didn't even know he had a Mossberg. I also handed the journal of Haversman, said he was a good man and that he should write what happens in here. It'll help him calm his nerves. It helps with me, anyway. He said his name was Gab.
We decided to head to this new area I had heard about, where there should be food and guns and hopefully a lot less people. We went back around, and we stayed well clear of the city. Didn't say anything the whole trip round. We make our way around and follow the road off to the right past the main city to a tunnel. I'm a bit nervous cause there's a whole bunch of cars, and a surprising lack of zombies. So, before we head in, I try and teach him how to use his pistol. I tell him how to turn the safety off, point and click, breath out, and that kind of stuff. And then he seemed to be getting it alright, until I start leading the way in there and I hear a POP and a sharp pain in my side. I turn around and see his awe-struck face, with the pistol in his hand. And I reach for my shotgun, and he goes, "No wait! Don't do that! It was an accident!" And my response, "I outta cleave your head in, son!" as he pulls out some bandages and starts wrapping me up. It was only a graze, but still, that kid shot me. So that's when I said, "Kid, you get to walk in front now."
As we entered the tunnel, he got a little trigger happy and started popping the first zombies he saw. He seemed to pick it up pretty fast, he was dropping zombies left and right, and I was thinking, "This kid is pretty good." That's when I noticed that for every shot he fired, four more zombies popped up from behind cars and cracks in the wall. I was doing all I could to keep them off me with my hammer. But, luckily that kid saved my ass by knocking one before it got me in the back. I returned the favor by dropping one that tried to bite him. But, we got through alright. That was when I saw the beauty of the other side.
It was green and pretty, but I noticed a lack of trees. Which has its pros and cons. We could see a long ways with our binoculars, but we could also be seen from a long ways. We started heading towards this rest stop up ahead. It had a bit of zombies. I told him not to use that pistol unless push came to shove. So, we got out our hammers and cleared the rest stop of zombies. I even think he found another magazine for his pistol, that lucky kid. After that, we saw this ranch. So, we started heading up, thinkin', "Well, they gotta have something good" We get up there and there are a lot more zombies that we had ever seen. So, he starts taking them down, one by one with his pistol. It even got so crazy I had to whip out my shotgun and take care of a few myself. I let off seven rounds, but I killed six zombies, though.
After we finally cleared out the ranch, we found some decent amount of food, and we decided it was getting late and we should head towards to new safe area we head about. We had to go around the ranch though. I don't like following the roads, but it was the best, safest way to get there. And as we travel along the side, coming up to this small town, we hear somebody yelling behind us. We both whip around and hit the ground, pulling out our shotguns. We tell him to stop where he was, and after about five minutes, we finally decide this guy is not gonna hurt so, and he's got nothing on him. We asked him if he wanted to travel with us, and asked him if he had a weapon. He said no, and that we was willing to travel with us, so I gave him a hammer. Gab gives him this nice helmet we found at the rest stop, and we head into this small town.
Of course, I make the new guy go in front. I learned my lesson about lettin' newbies follow behind me, you end up getting shot. We head into town and clear out the zombies, street by street, building by building, looking for supplies. And the new guy named War, it was his lucky day. We found an extra backpack so he didn't have to carry that rinky-dinky one on his back.
From there, we ask him if we're ready to go our separate ways. He decides he'd rather follow us to the safe zone that we had heard about. I guess he didn't want to be alone. I don't blame him, if I found a couple of good guys, I'd wanna stick with them. And as we're heading across, we're on a side of a hill alongside the road when we spot the dirt path up to the safe settlement. We hear a pop pop pop of a semi-automatic gunfire from across the street, from inside some trees. So all three of us hit the deck. I hear Gab go, "Shit! No rounds for the pistol!" and whips out his shotgun. I hear a couple of shots as I feel some stinging sensations all over me. I quickly pop some pain killers and wrap up a bullet wound in my arm, and I yell out, "Run!"
So, I take off over the hill and keep running. I take cover behind some rocks. I hear the bandits coming up, so I let off some rounds of my shotgun in their general direction to stave off the advance. After a good long while, I make it until I can barely run no more, when I get a shotgun shoved in my face. I saw my life flash before my eyes, and a big relief when I see Gab's child-like face standing behind that shotgun. I just fell to the ground, I had lost a lot of blood. He wraps me up with the medkit I had in my back and starts to help me get to the safe zone. Don't know where War went, I just hope he made it out alive. We finally get to the edge of the safe zone, and we see the tower in the distance. I tell Gab I was too tired and couldn't move no more. We found a big tree, and I just sat down and passed out. I am sure am glad to have a good man to watch my back.
