STAR WARS
EDGE OF THE EMPIRE
CHAPTER III:
SNAGGING BLACKMAIL
In the days of the empire, an honest cargo-hauler finds himself on the wrong end of Imperial tariffs. Labeled a smuggler, Cedric Valeran and first mate Amelia Crane are forced into the Outer Rim to earn a living. As their jobs become more dangerous, they hire a shistavanen named Tagg Rosk to provide some much needed muscle to their crew. During their travels, Amelia meets a twi'lek named Shala Kinsa who had fallen on hard times and was addicted to the spice ryll. Taking interest in her life, Amelia brings her aboard to give her companionship and aid her in her attempt to break her addiction.
Looking to modify their ship for better defense and speed, Cedric meets with a mechanic junkyard owner named Aelruino who arrives to inspect their vessel. After offering armor and speed modifications, Cedric haggles the price by offering to rescue Aelruino's daughter from the grip of Jazeen the Hutt.
Knowing that Jazeen is putting on a parade to showcase his possessions, the crew plans to cause a distraction and rescue Aelruino's daughter. They search the city and find an arms dealer, from which they purchase a pair of thermal detonators and a disruptor rifle with long-range modifications.
Amelia rigs a thermal detonator to remote detonate and they bury it right where the parade will be. The show girls are at the front, and behind them is a speeder. The girls are flanked by Jazeen's thugs. Cedric sets up atop a building down the street, while the others wait among the crowd near where the grenade is set. When the speeder goes across, Amelia detonates the thermal detonator.
The detonator destroys the speeder, and kills its thug pilots. Cedric fires at the thugs between the crew and the show girls, killing two with a single shot from his disruptor sniper rifle. Tagg rushes forward and finds Aelruino's daughter, convincing her to come with him. The remaining guards notice him, and Amelia and Shala blast them. They get away without further incident.
They deliver Aelruino his daughter, and he docks their pay. As the armor and engine upgrades are installed, Cedric gets a call from Bol Darran. He offers him another job.
The crew is hired to steal a holorecording of a message to a pirate named Mulran Task. The message was sent from his mistress, who happens to be married to a rival pirate. Mulran Task is leading a convoy of freighters, but is stopping at a gambling tournament in the Ergotell system. They are also told he is a collector of artifacts. Bol Darran will wait for them at Ergotell III. He sends them an invitation to the tournament.
They arrive at Ergotell and decide to detour to the planet Regoo, which Cedric knows is a planet covered in ancient ruins where smugglers are known to hide. He hopes to find an artifact there. They choose a landing site and begin to explore the nearest ruin. Barely within the under-city of a long-since abandoned town, they encounter armed guards. They are told to leave, and after several lies and some deceit, they end up being chased by a pair of X-Wing class fighters. Although they best the two fighters, their ship suffers heavy damage and their hyperdrive engines are disabled.
With the gambling tournament on the outskirts of an asteroid field, Cedric must pilot carefully. They arrive safely and join the tournament. Cedric and Amelia play cards and dice, while Tagg hunts for Mulran's ship. Shala distracts Cedric's opponents with her feminine wiles. Mulran Task himself sits down for dice with Cedric.
After overhearing a conversation, Tagg finally finds the docking platform for Mulran's ship, but finds it guarded. Shala flirts with Mulran, who reveals that he has a Nebulon-B frigate with an expanded hanger, with three squadrons of Y-Wing class fighters. This makes Cedric nervous, realizing that if they got caught they would be quickly defeated.
Shala seduces Mulran, who takes her back to his ship. He is called away on some business, and Shala finds the holorecording in his room. She stays the night with him and returns to the crew with what they came for. They quickly leave and head to Ergotell III. They had lost 900 credits in the gambling, and after all the repair work, they came out even.
Desperate for work, they take a job to smuggle medicine into a criminal residence to a prisoner in the system of Caike. They set a course and hope that this next job proves more fruitful.
